The Expanding Universe - the Bible Said it First?

The concept of an expanding universe, supported by Einstein's general relativity and observed redshifts, finds intriguing parallels in certain biblical verses. While interpretations vary, some see these passages as alluding to God "stretching out" the heavens, a concept that resonates with modern cosmology.

Here are 12 verses often cited in this context:

  1. Isaiah 42:5: "Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and spirit to those who walk in it."

  2. Isaiah 40:22: "It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in."

  3. Isaiah 44:24: "Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: 'I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.'"

  4. Isaiah 45:12: "I made the earth and created man on it; it was my hands that stretched out the heavens, and I commanded all their host."

  5. Isaiah 48:13: "My hand laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I call to them, they stand forth together."

  6. Isaiah 51:13: "And have you forgotten the Lord, your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth, and do you tremble all the day before the wrath of the oppressor, when he sets himself to destroy?"

  7. Jeremiah 10:12: "It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens."

  8. Jeremiah 51:15: "It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens."

  9. Zechariah 12:1: "The burden of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him."

  10. Job 9:8: "Who alone stretched out the heavens and trampled the waves of the sea."

  11. Psalm 104:2: "Who stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of your chambers on the waters."

  12. 2 Samuel 22:10: "He parted the heavens and came down; thick darkness was under his feet."

These verses repeatedly use the Hebrew verb "natah," often translated as "stretched out" or "spread out." Some interpret it as a dynamic action, suggesting an ongoing process of expansion. This aligns with the cosmological model of an expanding universe, where galaxies are moving away from each other, evidenced by redshift.

Agreement with Old Earth Creationism:

Old Earth creationism, which accepts the scientific consensus on the age of the universe (approximately 13.8 billion years), finds these verses compatible with its view. The vast timescales implied by an expanding universe fit comfortably within an Old Earth framework. The "stretching out" could be seen as a continuous act of God over billions of years. The redshift of light from distant galaxies, a key piece of evidence for expansion, requires immense cosmic distances and therefore vast amounts of time, which are consistent with old earth creationism.

Challenges to Young Earth Creationism:

Young Earth creationism, which posits a universe created in six literal 24-hour days approximately 6,000-10,000 years ago, faces significant challenges in reconciling these verses with scientific observations. The observed redshift of distant galaxies indicates that light has traveled for billions of years to reach us, contradicting a young universe. To maintain a literal six day creation and a young earth, explanations that drastically alter the speed of light, or the nature of space time, are required. These ad-hoc theories often violate established scientific principles. Furthermore, a rapidly expanding universe in a short time frame would have left far different observable evidence than is currently seen. The vast distances between galaxies, and the light from those galaxies, pose a major problem for the young earth creationist.

In conclusion, while biblical interpretations are diverse, the concept of God "stretching out" the heavens resonates with the scientific understanding of an expanding universe. This alignment is particularly harmonious with Old Earth creationism, while posing significant challenges to Young Earth creationism.
